Scouts complete new welcome signs for West Lafayette Eagle Scout projects by Ridgewood juniors Slade Miller and Wesson McPherson bring new signage to village entrances on County Road 16 and Route 93. West Lafayette Mayor Jessie Tubbs said she is thrilled the Scouts chose this project. “The revitalization committee has previously recommended a new marquis to the village — an idea originally suggested by Margaret Lowe and several others through Lori Cabot.” Tubbs said when Scoutmaster Jimmy Miller reached out for ideas, the new signs stood out to the Scouts. “The guys truly ran with it. Kelly Erb provided tremendous support in bringing it all together. The teamwork and dedication shown by the Shurtz family, McWane, Bice Masonry and our sidewalk contractor T.R. Snyder turned a big project into a major improvement for our village,” Tubbs said. Miller said the old sign coming into the village from Coshocton was deteriorating and his son Slade wanted to do something about it. Pleasant Gap/Bellefonte Rotary Club honors individuals at Senior Citizen Christmas Party PLEASANT GAP — On Dec. 4, the Pleasant Gap/Bellefonte Rotary Club held its annual Senior Citizen Christmas Party at CPI in Pleasant Gap. Residents from the Spring Township area and The Oaks filled the cafeteria while members of the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church and Boy Scouts served over 250 people. There were several highlights to the evening. Gene “Jumbo” Martz was presented with a Community Service Award for his dedication to umpiring for the Pleasant Gap League and coaching for the Bellefonte Teener League. He also continues to work as a crossing guard at Pleasant Gap Elementary School as he has for the last 40 years. Jumbo volunteers yearly at the Rotary Big Blue Raffle stand at the Grange Fair, even without being a Rotary member. This year, he put in 80 hours. The club also surprised member David Witherite with a plaque and a scholarship in his name to be given to a CPI student in the Carpentry and Building Construction Technology program. Dave exemplifies the international Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” For decades, he has given not only time and energy, but also heart and vision to the Pleasant Gap community. He has inspired many to do more, give more and care more deeply about neighbors, the community and the world we share. This was a true surprise for Witherite. The evening was capped off with holiday music by World Premier’s Entertainer, Zupe. FREEHOLD – The Freehold Regional High School District’s Student Recognition Award Ceremony saw students from across the district get honored for their incredible feats during the fall semester of the school year. The event was hosted by Freehold Township High School. Several students from Howell High School were honored for their academic, athletic, and other sorts of prowess they showed in after-school activities. Howell High School’s principal, Jeremy Braverman, called out all of the academic awards while the supervisor of extracurricular activities, Peter Meehan, called those who were honored in their after-school activities to the stage. The first students called to the stage from Howell High School were the five students who achieved national gold in the Technology Student Association (TSA) program. Other academic achievements from the school that were honored at the meeting include several students from Howell who were named National Merit Scholars. The first students to come to the stage to be honored for their achievements in their extracurricular activities were the members of the chorus who earned all-shore status. All-shore status is awarded to students who are considered the best in their specific extracurricular activity within the Shore Conference. One of the girls’ soccer players from Howell, Makenzie Memmolo, was honored for achieving first-team all-shore and third-team all-group 4 status. Students from across the district who earned their Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts were honored at the ceremony as well. Gabriel Spiegel was the only Howell High School student to achieve the honor. To earn his Eagle Scout, Spiegel completed a project where he helped to refurbish the Pinelander soccer complex. Spiegel’s project included refurbishing the snack stand, building benches, and refurbishing the entire area so people can sit down and eat while their kids play soccer. On a cold February day in 2024, I found a small newspaper clipping printed seven decades before. The story of roughly 100 words was discovered in an American newspaper dated December 23, 1959. Cut with a pair of scissors, at some point it was donated to the Historical Society. The pace of postwar American life accelerated in the late 1950s. Even the American flag was expanding, as the U.S. flag gained a 49th star in 1959 with Alaska becoming a state. Reporters looking for a good counterpoint to rapid transformations sweeping the eastern seaboard looked to Block Island. This AP story was not different. The day before this story ran, on Tuesday December 22nd, a snowstorm struck Block Island Sound. While sparing the majority of the state, Block Island was buried in snow and school on December 22nd was canceled on Block Island. Snowfall ‘Opens’ Block Island School “BLOCK ISLAND (AP) – The snowstorm accomplished the unusual in Block Island today. It will open the island’s one school tomorrow when it normally would have been closed for the Christmas vacation. The pupils – elementary all the way to high school – were to have produced their annual Christmas show this morning and then gone home on vacation. But the storm canceled classes – the only such incident reported in the state. However, school officials did not want to rob the children of their Christmas play. So, they scheduled an opening of the school for tomorrow morning so that the performance can go on. Then everyone will go home for Christmas.” The Block Island School’s holiday production called, “A Living Christmas Card,” debuted nearly two decades before. Written and directed by two teachers at the consolidated Block Island School, Mrs. Gertrude Ball and Mrs. Mildred Rose, by the mid-1950s this production was known across the state.
