The John Everett Chapter DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and Robert Rankin SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) recently recognized Dale and Doreen Alexander for their many American flag displays around Columbus. This has always been a pet project of Dale’s and now he receives help from the Boy Scouts in replacing old, torn flags. After serving 22 years in the military, Dale retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and moved to Columbus. The couple then purchased the Brides House. Doreen made sure anyone who needed a dress for special occasions was able to get one and also supplied dresses for the Magnolia Belles. After closing Brides House, the couple turned it into God’s Corner Store. They receive donations, sell some items and distribute what they can to people in need. They help people in disasters, like Kerrville, all hurricanes, fires, floods, Vets in sewing on badges at no cost, homeless vets, mothers in need and much more. They are very patriotic and community oriented. All profits from the store go to Columbus Ministerial Alliance. Dale is active in the VFW and in the Masons, where he is currently serving as District Deputy Grand Marshall. His current goal is to start a museum at the Mason’s Lodge, which is turning 170 years old in January. They have records dating back to 1810 and much more memorabilia. Recently, the Alexanders donated an antique wicker wheelchair to the War Museum. The wheelchair is dated 1840. They also donated a folding chair from the Civil War with signage indicating it belonged to a field officer. When asked why he puts so many American flags around town, Dale replied that it was his contribution to Columbus. At this time, especially with the divisions we seem to be having, we need to be reminded what a wonderful country it is that we live in. There are so many things Dale and Doreen Alexander do to help our community, we just want to say “Thank You.”

These boxes will improve habitats for duck species in both ponds at the park. Oconee paramedic and EMS instructor Glenn Henry recently received the Governor’s Public Safety Award for “Outstanding Contribution to EMS Education.” Dove Creek Elementary School fifth grade teacher Alyssa Benner was chosen as 2026 Don Cargill STEM Scholar. North Oconee High School counselor Mackenzie Gilbert has been named to the ninth class of LEAD Career, Technical and Agricultural Education. Lastly, UGA Extension Natural Resource Agent and Oconee native Garrett Hibbs made it into the Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40 list for 2025.

By RENEE BUTTS Carmel Fire Department Public Education Officer On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Carmel community came together in a powerful show of generosity and compassion to support the Carmel Fire Auxiliary’s Community Assistance Program (CAP). Through this annual effort, volunteers helped deliver a meaningful holiday meal, essential pantry items, and gifts for children to 198 families throughout the Carmel Clay area, ensuring that many neighbors experienced the warmth and joy of the holiday season. CAP is the longest-running program of the Carmel Fire Auxiliary and the Carmel Fire Department, and it continues to grow in both reach and impact each year. The success of this program is made possible only through the dedication and hard work of countless volunteers who give their time, energy, and hearts to serve others. A special and heartfelt thank-you goes to CAP Coordinator Jessie Baker, whose organizational skills are the backbone of the program. She truly has her finger on the pulse of the families in need, coordinating family sponsorships, overseeing the collection of gifts, and managing the many moving parts of delivery day. Her attention to detail and commitment ensure that everything runs smoothly and that no family is overlooked. Significant contributions also come from Boy Scouts Troop 112, who generously spend the Saturday prior to delivery day boxing and organizing food items in preparation for distribution. In addition, dozens of volunteers assist with packing vehicles, sorting donations, and serving as drivers who personally deliver items to nearly 200 families across the community. Despite the cold, blustery weather, volunteers willingly gave up their Saturday morning to help others. Their willingness to serve reflects the true spirit of the season and highlights how fortunate our community is. The 33rd Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Jamboree (APRSJ) formally concluded with a Grand Campfire and Closing Ceremony held at the Grand Arena of Camp Botolan, Zambales, marking the culmination of a week-long celebration of friendship, discipline, and global unity among Scouts from across the Asia-Pacific region. In his message, Zambales Governor Jun Ebdane, who served as Camp Chief, urged the participants to carry forward the values of Scouting as they return to their respective countries, emphasizing leadership, service, and commitment shaped by their shared experiences during the Jamboree. The closing program was led by Governor Ebdane alongside Botolan Mayor Jun Omar Ebdane, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, officials of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), and Asia-Pacific Region (APR) officials, who collectively recognized the successful staging of the international gathering. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the lighting of the Grand Campfire, led by Mayor Jun Omar Ebdane, followed by a collective performance of the official Jamboree song, “Scouts We Are One,” symbolizing the unity and camaraderie forged among the participants. The ceremony also featured the formal turnover of the APR flag to Thailand, the host country of the 34th Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Jamboree in 2029. The successful conclusion of the 33rd APRSJ underscored the collaborative efforts of the Provincial Government of Zambales, the Local Government of Botolan, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines led by Atty. Emilio B. Aquino, Asia-Pacific Region officials, and partner institutions in advancing youth development through Scouting. Jacklyn “JJ” Wilson of Auburn was awarded her Eagle Scout rank at a Scouts Troop 19 ceremony Nov. 9 at the Auburn Elks Lodge. The 16-year-old Eagle received a thumbs up from dad Kris Wilson as mom Vickie Wilson and Troop 19 Scoutmaster Steven Lease watched. JJ, a Placer High School junior, is the first female scout in the 90-year history of Troop 19 to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, the top rank one can achieve, according to Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. Kris Wilson, who achieved a first-class rank in Boy Scouts, said his daughter set the highest goal possible when she attended her first meeting. "She learned all the ranks. Eagle was highest. She was determined from that moment on," he said. "It means a lot to me because as parents we put a lot of effort into helping her achieve her dreams and this was definitely a dream of hers." A former Nebraska Boy Scouts camp in a railroad city is set to give residents a huge boost as it becomes a new state park. Camp Augustine first opened to Boy Scouts along the Platte River in 1956 but was sold to the city of Grand Island in 2023 for $2 million. For the last two years its future has been in limbo but last week the city council voted 9-0 in favor of offloading the 156-acre campsite to the state. Read More

On Saturday, December 6, 2028, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem came to town to help the Boy Scouts and hundreds of volunteers in this endeavor. The Mackinaw is the Coast Guard Cutter docked at Navy Pier for several days with over 1200 Christmas trees on board from Michigan. <br><br>Noem was met with about 25 protesters who were kept about a block away off the property of Navy Pier. The group sang a variety of Christmas carols but changing the words from Oh Christmas Tree to Oh Kristi Noem.
