Nelson has announced her retirement, effective July 2026. The Board of Directors will launch a national search for her successor in the coming months. Nelson has been a transformative leader, guiding the organization through significant milestones that have shaped the Girl Scout experience for thousands of girls across the region, according to a Tuesday, January 20th, release from the group. The organization currently has 10,000 Girl Scouts and 3,000 adult volunteers. “Over 24 years, I truly believe we fulfill our mission,” Nelson said in a Tuesday interview. “We definitely build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. That is our mission, and I guarantee you, that is the work we do. You know what's really funny? Even girls that when I started with Girl Scouts 24 years ago. So think about it. Some of them were 7, 8, 9, 10 years old.” “Now some of them are literally married and have kids that are Girl Scouts. Yes. And they’ve become leaders, and then they will come to my office or they'll swing by and they'll say, oh, my God, Diane, Girl Scouts is so awesome,” she said. “I learned so much. I learned so many things when I worked for the Girl Scouts. It really helped me build my skill set. “That is just one thing about Girl Scouts. We do truly impact girls lives in a very positive way through our organization,” she added, “It's been around for, what, 114 years now. Norwich’s Dennis Lisee among 14 in CT Veterans Hall of Fame class Fourteen veterans from across Connecticut, including Dennis F. Lisee of Norwich, will be inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame in a ceremony scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 22 in Rocky Hill. The event will take place at the Gold Star Families Memorial Auditorium on the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs campus, according to a community announcement. The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities after their military service. Dennis F. Lisee of Norwich is one of the honorees. Lisee was the first baby born at the U.S. Naval Subase in Groton on Aug. 6, 1952. He grew up in Taftville, the French-Canadian part of Norwich. Growing up, he volunteered with his church as an altar boy, played sports, and was a Boy Scout. Just after turning 18, he entered the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was trained as a security policeman. During this enlistment, he was chosen to represent the USAF, working inside the White House with President Richard M. Nixon. Among some of his duties, he executed the death watch and funerals for President Lyndon B. Johnson in Texas, President Harry S. Truman in Missouri, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover at the U.S. Capitol. He participated in various state dinners and the Vietnam Prisoner of War Dinner at the White House. He traveled across the country representing the USAF at various functions. After being discharged from the USAF, he became a Connecticut State Trooper and retired as a detective with 23 years of state service. During this time, he was also enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was the weapons sergeant on a Special Forces A-Team until he was injured on a jump. He retired after 20 years with the Reserve and was the non-commissioned officer-in-charge of training throughout New England, when he retired from the USAR. 'It's a blessing:' West Baton Rouge communities come together to help veteran with property cleanup PORT ALLEN - Earlier this month, Theodore "Ted" Melancon told the Port Allen City Council that his health issues were causing him to struggle with the cleanup of his property. Just moments after he finished speaking, Port Allen Police Officer Rushing Juneau stepped up to the microphone and offered to find some help. Crews from around the area were at Melancon's house on Monday, pitching in to help their neighbor. "Just helping clean up, demoing, getting the roof ready for the roofers, and kind of cleaning up," Durand Eaves with J&E Handyman Services said. Melancon has worn many hats during his long life. He is a veteran, but he has also served as a Boy Scouts troop leader and a member of the Knights of Columbus. When people from the community, like arborist Jeremy Vaughn, heard Melancon’s story, they stepped up. "This is actually the hometown community that I grew up in, so as soon as this got any kind of attention, a lot of people started tagging me in posts saying they had some people in need," Vaughn said. Trending News Port Allen resident Stephen Cady said that the opportunity to help someone from his town means everything to him. "I was blessed to have my own business and work for myself, allowing me to give back to the community. This is where I'm from. I live on the west side, so just trying to give back to somebody that gave for us," Cady said. Melancon has even received support from other veterans. "Veterans, we see our own. We see one in need, we immediately stop what we're doing, and we come and offer assistance because veterans take care of veterans, and no one knows veterans more than veterans," Addis Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander John Summers said. UTICA — Scouting America’s Leatherstocking Council will hold its annual Spring Into Scouting fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 20, in the Crystal Ballroom at the DoubleTree by Hilton Utica, 102 Lafayette St. During the event, the council will present its 2026 VIP Community Champion Awards to three local leaders for service and support of scouting. Honorees include: - Jill Hayes, CEO of NY Sash and a council board member; - Mike Morrill of Total Solutions; and - Brian McKee, CEO of House of the Good Shepherd and the council’s volunteer vice president of development.

ODESSA — Troop 707 needs a trailer. Specifically, a $3,500 trailer. The Land O' Lakes-based scout troop of both boys and girls needs it to get to camping and other events, so, like any other scout troop, they held a fundraiser. Instead of selling something in front of a Publix or Home Depot, Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Noll had an idea — and it involved a famous scouting pastime. Every year, scouts build and design a Pinewood Derby car. Then, racing ensues until a winner is declared. Noll thought: Why not move a race like that to a brewery, letting beer drinkers build their own cars for a donation and win prizes? The Pintwood Derby was born. "The best part," Scoutmaster Ron Mitchell said, "100 percent of the proceeds go to the kids — to the troop. As dads with kids in Cub Scouts, we all take pride in building our kids' cars. So when Mike came up with this, we thought we were thinking outside the box for a different kind of fundraiser. "We really need that trailer and we feel that shouldn't come off the backs of the scouts." The Pintwood Derby was held at Thirsty Buffalo Brewing Company on Jan. 9, with 29 cars competing over 28 races. Several scouts helped, from loading the cars to retrieving them and even running the timing system on a computer. After grabbing a pint, participants bought the car kit, assembled it and decorated it. Contestants, for a larger fee, could also use previously raced cars — basically ones built by scouts from years ago. The car touted as "Gray Ghost" took home the top prize. Mitchell felt the turnout was "pretty good" and hoped to raise "a little under $500." Troop 707 operates out of Harvester Community Church in Land O' Lakes, after breaking off from another troop about 12 years ago. Mitchell and Noll's sons are in the troop, working their way to Eagle Scout rank. In the end, Mitchell enjoyed the event — because he had a pint himself.
