Warner Music Group (WMG) settled a lawsuit with an AI company in exchange for a piece of the action. The label announced on Wednesday that it had resolved a 2024 lawsuit against AI music creation platform Udio. As part of the deal, Udio gets to license Warner's catalog for an upcoming music creation service. This follows a similar settlement between Universal Music Group and Udio, announced last month. Udio's service will allow subscribers to create, listen to and discover AI-generated music trained on licensed work. You’ll be able to generate new songs, remixes and covers using favorite artists' voices or compositions. The boundaries between human creation and an algorithm's approximation of it are about to grow murkier. Not in terms of artistic quality, but it will be based on what proliferates online. WMG is framing the deal as a win for artists, who will — if they choose to opt in — gain a new revenue stream. Ahead of the service’s launch, Udio will roll out "expanded protections and other measures designed to safeguard the rights of artists and songwriters." So, the settlement does at least appear to reassert some control over artists’ work. What the normalization of robot-made music will do for society's collective tastes is another question. The settlement echoes a warning Spotify sounded to musicians and labels last month. California family wins settlement after City charges $55K to build ADU November 19, 2025 East Palo Alto, California; November 18, 2025: A California family can now build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on their property without shelling out a nearly $55,000 fee after the City settled a federal lawsuit challenging its extortionate “inclusionary zoning” ordinance. Wesley Yu sued the City of East Palo Alto after the City refused to grant a building permit unless he either dedicated his planned accessory dwelling unit to become affordable housing for the City or agreed to pay $54,891 in “in-lieu” fees. “This settlement is a victory for the Yu family and their right to build a better life without unnecessary government interference,” said Austin Waisanen, an attorney at Pacific Legal Foundation, which represented Mr. Yu free of charge. “The City’s commitment to no longer imposing extortionate fees for some ADU projects is a step in the right direction. We will continue to fight for everyone’s property rights by challenging extortionate laws like these.” The Yus wanted to build multi-generational housing to create space for their growing family and host visiting relatives. Disney+ has Star Wars and Paramount+ has Star Trek, so it's about time Amazon gets its own sci-fi franchise with "star" in the title. Prime Video has just greenlit a TV revival of the iconic Stargate franchise, according to a report by Deadline. This will be the fourth major TV show in the series, following the first movie. We don't know anything about the plot and where it fits into the decades-long mythology but we do know that the showrunner is Martin Gero. He's a veteran of the IP, having cut his teeth in the industry while working on Stargate: Atlantis back in the early 2000s. He also created the show Blindspot and was showrunner on the recent reboot of Quantum Leap, which was actually kind of nifty (RIP.) Franchise creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are on board as executive producers, as are Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi. That last duo were behind most of the Stargate TV projects, including the most recent live action show Stargate Universe. This makes a lot of sense for Prime Video. Amazon did recently buy MGM, after all, and the Stargate IP came along with that purchase. It's not the first time the platform will have dabbled with science fiction. Prime Video most famously saved The Expanse after it was originally cancelled by SyFy. There are three more books in that series that have yet to be adapted. Just saying. For the uninitiated, the Stargate franchise involves the titular Stargates. These are transportation devices created by ancient aliens that act as galaxy-spanning wormholes. Chair Joseph Gravellese was joined by Treasurer Anayo Osueke, and fellow board members Dean Harris, Judy Gosselin, Deb Frank, and Laili Pietri. Osueke presented the treasurer’s report. He said the AHTF has a balance in its account of $663,624.29, which takes into account $167,000 that is encumbered for the next two payments to The Neighborhood Developers (TND), to whom the AHTF made a grant of $250,000 for TND’s low-income housing development at 110 Ocean Ave. TND’s 110 Ocean Ave. project is a collaboration with North Suffolk Community Services (NSCS), which owns the property. The new, 7-story building will incorporate eight group living units, commercial space for NSCS to provide supportive services and classes for community members, 12 one-bedroom apartments set-aside for residents eligible for services through NSCS, and 36 two and three-bedroom apartments for families. The bank account balance also reflects an additional $10,625.19 that will be contributed by the AHTF to the Senior Citizen Home Repair program. However, the balance does not reflect a recent contribution of $250,000 from Mill Creek Residential LLC, a national residential company, pursuant to a linkage agreement that was a condition of the city’s approval for Mill Creek’s Modera residential project at 550-560 Revere Beach Blvd. (which is now renting units) to support affordable housing initiatives in the city. Brookfield (BN-T) announced Wednesday morning a US$100-billion investment strategy, in partnership with NVIDIA and the Kuwait Investment Authority, which is designed to keep the Canadian company at the forefront of the global artificial intelligence infrastructure race. A cornerstone of the strategy will be the Brookfield Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Fund (BAIIF), launched today with a target of $10 billion (all figures US) of initial equity commitments to invest across the full spectrum of AI infrastructure assets. Among the target sectors are energy, development land, data centres and computing. “AI is creating one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in history, comparable to the formation of the modern power grid and global telecom networks, but unfolding at a far greater pace and significantly larger scale,” Sikander Rashid, head of AI infrastructure at Brookfield, said in the announcement. “This buildout will require $7 trillion of capital in the next 10 years across the entire AI value chain including power, compute, data centres, and beyond. “We are thrilled to formally launch our dedicated AI program in partnership with NVIDIA and others to deliver this infrastructure at speed, at scale, and to the highest standard for enterprises, technology firms, and sovereign governments.” Rather than investing in the actual development of the AI technology, Brookfield's strategy is to provide the extensive, and costly, physical infrastructure required to support the sector. Got a brilliant idea to help caregivers? RFK Jr. plans to give $2M for best innovation. Family caregivers are overwhelmed, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. wants to use artificial intelligence to help them. As part of a newly announced national competition, he's willing to award up to $2 million to those with the 10 best ideas. Kennedy announced the launch of the "Caregiver AI Challenge" on Nov. 18, while joined by U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary Douglas A. Collins, Assistant Secretary for Aging Mary Lazare and caregiving advocates including Jason Resendez, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving. There are 63 million family caregivers in the United States, or nearly 1 in 4 adults, according to data jointly published by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. That's a 45% increase since 2015, and the data shows that where you live has a big impact on the care resources you have access to. The caregiving crisis has gained visibility in recent years as the number of caregivers has increased, and notable celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Chris Hemsworth and Emma Heming Willis have drawn attention to the issue. AI can "transform caregiving," Kennedy said, by delivering on-demand support, predicting and monitoring health risks and automating paperwork "so that caregivers can focus on what matters most." EXCLUSIVE: The General Services Administration struck a deal with Perplexity AI to offer the company's artificial intelligence services to every government agency for 25 cents each, making it the 21st contract under the OneGov initiative. The deal is the first of its kind, under the initiative to modernize how the government purchases goods and services, to offer a direct-to-consumer product for federal agencies. Previous deals the supply-side agency has made historically were through middle-man agencies, which help resell contracts to the government at a higher cost. Perplexity’s AI services will allow federal workers to access real-time information that combines internet-scale knowledge with connections to the government’s technological systems to assist with day-to-day duties. GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service commissioner, Josh Gruenbaum, told FOX Business that this type of deal is "essential for integrating AI into federal government." "As the federal government expands its use of AI, the government itself will innovate more and its needs from the leading edge of AI will only increase," Jerry Ma, Perplexity’s vice president of policy, told FOX Business. "Perplexity is a natural partner for that." A senior GSA official said deals like this will help grow AI in the U.S. because it will broaden Perplexity’s use-case to further develop its systems, while advancing federal workers’ abilities. "This deal provides federal workers with an extremely powerful multi-model research tool which will enable them to increase efficiency and save time on work such as critical research projects, memos, contract and lease writing," Gruenbaum said. This time of year, I don’t have to look at the calendar to know what time it is. I can already feel it in my bones. The urge to eat pumpkin pie and start making my year-end albums list tells me all I need to know. I have been doing both things for most of my life. I’m not sure if either is good for me, and yet I persist. When it comes to the second thing, I also start thinking about what other music critics are going to put on their lists. And then I go into prognostication mode about annual critical consensus. A lot of albums come out in any given year. It’s impossible to say how many — somewhere between 98 and a million, I suppose. But anyone who reads year-end lists knows that a certain coterie of records pop up, time and again, with a select few routinely showing up at the top. (Or the bottom, as most of these lists unfold in descending order, for the sake of showmanship.) Last year, you didn’t have to be an expert to predict that Charli XCX was going to come out ahead.
