LSF Medical Solutions’ Pneumero is a respiratory health monitoring device that measures gas-washout for patients with chronic lung disease at home. The University of Iowa John Papajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the Small Business Development Center hosted the competition. Amazon Web Services and PREDICTif Solutions sponsored the event, which featured 10 businesses presenting AI-driven ventures. “This event highlights the depth of talent and innovation happening across Iowa and beyond,” said Dana Rupe, director of Iowa JPEC. “By partnering with AWS, PREDICTif Solutions and the SBDC, we’re helping founders harness the AI tools and mentorship needed to turn ideas into real-world impact.”

If you’ve ever struggled with a tough math problem, you know how useful it is to think a little longer and work through it carefully. OpenAI’s o1 model showed that when LLMs are trained to do the same—by using more compute during inference—they get significantly better at solving reasoning tasks like mathematics, coding, and logic. However, the recipe behind OpenAI’s reasoning models has been a well kept secret. That is, until last week, when DeepSeek released their DeepSeek-R1 model and promptly broke the internet (and the stock market!). Besides performing as well or better than o1, the DeepSeek-R1 release was accompanied by a detailed tech report that outlined the key steps of their training recipe. This recipe involved several innovations, most notably the application of pure reinforcement learning to teach a base language model how to reason without any human supervision. As shown in the figure below, making a powerful reasoning model is now very simple if you have access to a capable base model and a high-quality data mixture: However, the DeepSeek-R1 release leaves open several questions about: - Data collection: How were the reasoning-specific datasets curated? - Model training: No training code was released by DeepSeek, so it is unknown which hyperparameters work best and how they differ across different model families and scales. - Scaling laws: What are the compute and data trade-offs in training reasoning models? These questions prompted us to launch the Open-R1 project, an initiative to systematically reconstruct DeepSeek-R1’s data and training pipeline, validate its claims, and push the boundaries of open reasoning models. By building Open-R1, we aim to provide transparency on how reinforcement learning can enhance reasoning, share reproducible insights with the open-source community, and create a foundation for future models to leverage these techniques. During our social media review, we have noticed several young women who are in the Boy Scouts who have completed their Eagle Scout projects. State Senator Shelley Mayer recently posted, Great to honor Jazlyn Priscilla Fernandez at her Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Love that Troup 420 from Port Chester continues to have so many young women achieve the rank of Eagle! Thanks to Senator Mayer for highlighting the dedication and service of Jazlyn Fernandez, who wrote the following for her eagle scout project. “My name is Jazlyn Fernandez, and I am 16 years old. I am part of Troop 420. I started scouting at the age of 10 with my friends. I was one of 4 girls in Port Chester to join Troop 420. We joined Webelos year 2 and then met with the future adult leader, Dona Ortiz, of the girls’ Troop. Our Troop continued to grow, mainly due to the recruitment efforts of its members. All of us in the Troop contributed ideas on the Troop mascot and color. Over the last four years, I have worked on fulfilling my rank requirements and earning merit badges to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. “I’m very proud of myself for achieving this Eagle, which I have been waiting for since I was little. I had so many wonderful experiences in scouting. We had many campouts that were really fun and taught us valuable life lessons. I met many wonderful people and formed numerous friendships. “I feel that as a Troop, we are a family because we work and have fun together. There were seven ranks and 21 merit badge requirements to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. I enjoyed earning all the badges, but my two favorites have to be personal fitness and swimming. Despite the recent surge, Intel trades at a fraction of rivals' price-to-sales ratios, suggesting upside potential for new investors in 2025. Semiconductor veteran Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) may not be the first name that springs to mind when you're thinking about artificial intelligence (AI) investments. AI leaders like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) have posted huge stock gains in the last three years while Intel only rose 39%. And when people are weighing hardware options for their next AI supercomputer, they're comparing Nvidia's Blackwell chips to Advanced Micro Devices' (NASDAQ: AMD) Instinct series. Intel's Gaudi AI accelerators are an afterthought at best and easily ignored at worst. But the times, they are a-changing. FAIRFIELD – It’s a bittersweet moment for Fairfield’s Boy Scout Troop No. 64. The troop is celebrating the Eagle Scout badge earned by Cooper Kraft, who accomplished the feat by completing a community service project, building storage containers for Cradle of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center in Mt. Pleasant. But sadly, this Eagle Scout badge will be the final one earned by a scout in Troop No. 64 because the troop doesn’t have enough members to continue. Troop No. 64 Scout Master Joe Garretson said the troop must register with the parent organization every year, and it must have at least three members. Now that Kraft has completed his final project and has aged out of Scouts, the troop has only one member remaining, not enough to re-register in 2026. That final member is Alex Hudson, a junior at Fairfield High School who just turned 17. Garretson said Hudson could finish his Eagle Scout project before he turns 18, but it won’t be with Troop No. 64. Garretson said he’s sad to see the troop’s tenure come to an end, a troop he has been involved with for the last 14 years or so, ever since his son Tristen was in kindergarten. Tristen completed his Eagle Scout project last year, and before him, Dre Smithburg also accomplished that feat. Kraft said this small group of Boy Scouts has formed a close bond over the years, going on camping trips together and serving their community. “It kind of stinks knowing that other people aren’t going to have that,” Kraft said about the troop ending this year. Through this partnership, GAR's 1,200+ members will gain access to SkySlope Forms — which helps agents fill out paperwork more efficiently through its automated features and MLS syncing — and DigiSign — which enables agents to manage and sign documents virtually.
