This Charming Tiny Island in Southern California Is the Perfect Day Trip A guide to the tiny island packed with food, fun, and frozen desserts. Just off of Pacific Coast Highway is Balboa Island, a small island with a perimeter loop of just under two miles. The island’s small size makes it perfect for a full (or even half) day trip and incredibly walkable. With most of its businesses centralized on Marine Avenue, you can spend the first part of the day with your choice of restaurants and shopping and then explore the rest of the island. I’ve been a frequent visitor of Balboa since I was a kid, with my family coming there for visits around our trips to nearby Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, or Laguna Beach. At any age, my sisters and I always found something to do on the island. When we were younger, we marvelled at the dessert options at Balboa Candy or one of the classic frozen banana shops. In my teenage years, we windowshopped through the variety of boutiques on Marine Avenue. It’s safe to say Balboa is full of nostalgia and fond memories. Here are some of my favorite spots around the island. EAT AND DRINK Start the day with a coffee or tea at Huskins Coffee, then cross the street to grab one of Orange County’s “famous cinnamon rolls” from Balboa Island Baking Company. If you book early enough, you may even be able to snag a spot in one of their classes. Because of its proximity to many iconic OC beaches, Balboa is a great stop to make before a trip down to the water. If that’s your plan, I recommend grabbing lunch sandwiches and sides from the deli at Irvine Ranch Market. For dinner, there are a number of options along Marine Avenue, but one of my favorites is the family-owned Basilic. They have a selection of delicious Swiss-French dishes, including a great Coq au Vin and Boeuf Bourguignon. UI Veterans Week events The Hawkeye Distinguished Veterans Award Ceremony takes place at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Richey Ballroom of the IMU. It’s one of several events scheduled for the University of Iowa’s Veterans Week, Nov. 7–16. The award, established in 2015, honors members of the armed forces with a strong UI connection who demonstrated exceptional service to the United States military, their communities, and the university. Their leadership, service, and continued impact exemplify the Hawkeye spirit. This year’s recipients are: - David E. Mallot, United States Army - Greg Clark, United States Army - Todd Jacobus, United States Army - Vance F. Stewart III, United States Army - Kirk Stabler, United States Air Force 2025 honorees and their accomplishments Lieutenant Colonel David E. Malott, honored posthumously, served in the United States Army for 22 years, with deployments in Germany, Venezuela, and across the U.S. He was a jumpmaster with the 82nd Airborne Division and a foreign area officer in Latin America. Malott played a key diplomatic role in strengthening U.S. military and cultural relations. His military honors include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals. Malott joined the UI as professor of military science from 1993 to 1997, mentoring more than 250 ROTC cadets. It’s a well-known understanding that the only constant is change. The restaurant industry knows this well. However, some establishments have managed to be flexible enough to adapt to these constant obstacles while also remaining secure in their principles, giving diners comfort in knowing that they will consistently deliver exceptional experiences. Here, three restaurants explain how they do it. Musso & Frank Grill in Los Angeles, California Musso & Frank Grill established itself as an anchorpoint of the Los Angeles restaurant scene in 1919. Located on Hollywood Boulevard just a few blocks away from iconic landmarks such as the TCL Chinese Theatre, the restaurant has a prime location in a very tourist-centric area. Combined with a name drop on Taylor Swift’s most recent album The Life of a Showgirl, (the song “Elizabeth Taylor” has the lyric “We hit the best booth at Musso & Frank’s”), one might expect that the establishment would be a very “touristy” restaurant. However, Musso & Frank’s president and CEO Mark Echeverria says it’s far from it. “We probably have a 85-90 percent return clientele of Angelenos that we’ve developed a relationship with over the years… It’s not uncommon to walk through the dining room on any given night and see three or four generations at a table enjoying Musso’s,” Echeverria says. Echeverria is a fourth generation operator and a member of the family who established the Los Angeles restaurant in 1919. Over the course of its 106-year history, Echeverria says what has allowed Musso’s to succeed is the prioritization of guest relationships. A Peconic-based company wants to bring prefabricated homes to the North Fork as construction costs rise and inventory remains low. Compact Home Solutions hosted an informational session at The Agency in Southold on Oct. 30, showcasing its Swedish-designed homes and accessory dwelling units, and answering questions about installation, costs and permits. The company sells custom-built homes created in Sweden that meet federal, state and local building codes, which are shipped to local properties. Installations are completed by a local-third party contractor. Buyers are responsible for building and property permits, site preparation, foundation installation and utility hookups. Sales director Maria McBride said the company has installed one three-bedroom house in Southampton and is now looking to sell prefabricated ADUs. The basic units are 450 square feet in size, with insulated floors, walls and ceilings, and cost roughly $180,000 including installation. It takes about six months from production start to delivery, Ms. McBride said. That timeframe doesn’t include the time it takes to obtain all necessary permits, install foundation and secure utility hookups. Cutchogue residents Vivian Velez and Tonya Kaiser attended the meeting, expressing concerns about the rising cost of living on the North Fork. Ms. Kaiser said she was looking for ways to remain in the area, including possibly building an ADU on her property to rent out. Her daughters are 16 and 20 years old. Ms. Velez also is looking for a soultion to keep her 27-year-old daughter from moving away because of the lack of affordable housing on the North Fork. “We want them to stay here, we don’t want them to leave,” Ms. Velez told The Suffolk Times. “We’re trying to find ways to make them stay.” Southold’s Housing Plan currently allows ADUs between 220 and 750 square feet. Designed by Yong Ju Lee Architecture, this project arrives at a critical juncture. The architecture and construction sector currently accounts for the highest carbon emissions among all global industries. After 10,000 years of evolution alongside humanity, architecture entered the 20th century prioritizing efficiency and economy above all else, adopting concrete and steel as its near-exclusive materials. This pursuit of industrial optimization, while enabling rapid development, detached architecture from its ecological roots and intensified the environmental burden of the built environment. Designer: Yong Ju Lee Architecture Following the era of environmental crisis and the pandemic, a new approach has emerged to redefine sustainability itself. Organism-based composite materials present fresh possibilities for architecture, challenging the non-recyclable and non-degradable nature of inorganic construction materials. The Mycelial Hut experiments with mycelium, the fungal network that serves as nature’s filter, to reinterpret what eco-friendly architecture can be. But here’s where it gets really interesting. This isn’t about simply replacing one material with another. The project explores bio-integrated fabrication methods that align growth, decay, and design within a single process.
