ROCKTON, IL - Every year, the Hononegah Women's Club offers camperships to local students in grades 6 to 11 who live within the boundaries of Hononegah Community High School District. That moment made me realize how much I had grown and how Scouting was helping me become the best version of myself. Before Boy Scouts, I wasn‘t always the most confident person. I tended to hang back and just watch as patrol leaders and scouts helped each other and had fun together. However, when I got the chance to serve as an assistant patrol leader, everything changed. Suddenly, I was the one people looked to for guidance. I had to make decisions, solve problems, and keep things running smoothly. There were times I doubted myself, like when I was the only leader available to help new scouts. Through trial and error, I learned how to apply the leadership skills I had picked up from older scouts and use them to guide the younger ones. Now, I use those same leadership skills in my journalism class and at school-whether I’m working on a news story in a group or helping classmates finish their projects.
