Local students share camp experiences with Hononegah Woma...
ROCKTON, IL - Every year, the Hononegah Women's Club offers camperships to local students in grades 6 to 11 who live within the boundaries of Hononegah Community High School District. Eligible students can receive funding to attend academic, vocational, or service camps related to fine arts, vocal or instrumental music, speech, leadership, 4-H, and scouting. In past years, a wide array of presentations featured students interested in culinary school, horse camp, scouting, and fashion design. It is customary for campers to present to the Hononegah Women's Club, which is one of the club's favorite programs of the year. This year's recipients included two Boy Scouts and another who went to a camp that offered future leadership opportunities. Hononegah senior Camden Greenfield and Willowbrook Middle School eighth-grader Mason Binger, both of Troop 620, gave a full slide presentation. Greenfield and Binger went to Camp Tesonas in Wisconsin. Camden Greenfield said, "There were about 10-15 troops there from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin." Greenfield said, "This is my first time successfully kayaking." Mason Binger shared, "The rest of us went on paddle boards and we tried to flip each other off of our water crafts." Greenfield said, "At animation, we learned how to do stop motion." Binger said, "I worked on First and Second Class towards rank advancement. Within the past few weeks, I have actually completed both. I also got pretty close to finishing the camping merit badge." "While we were tie-dying, it overflowed, and it looked like a crime scene," Greenfield said. Binger added, "I also dyed my hands and fingernails for about two weeks." Greenfield said, "At Tesonas every Friday night, they have a tradition that they call Mountain Dew Night. They used to have canned Mountain Dew, but they swapped the bottles this year." Binger said, "They also try to trick you into saying you can't do it due to some sort of copyright franchise." A photo flashed across the scr...

This Tiny Red Shelter in the Alps Blurs Art and Arch...
Picture this: a bright red pod perched at 2,300 meters in the Italian Alps, measuring just 4 by 2 meters, designed to shelter nine climbers in an emergency while also serving as a cultural outpost for a contemporary art gallery. If that sounds like a wild concept, well, that’s because it is. The Aldo Frattini Bivouac, designed by the research and design studio EX., is part of something called “Thinking Like a Mountain,” a biennial program organized by GAMeC (Bergamo’s Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art) that explores the relationship between art, landscape, and ecology. But unlike your typical art project, this one involves helicopters, emergency shelter protocols, and a whole lot of mountain weather. Located along the Alta Via delle Orobie Bergamasche in Val Seriana, the structure replaces a decaying asbestos shed that was no longer safe for climbers. The design team, led by Andrea Cassi and Michele Versaci, approached this project with a humility that’s refreshing in contemporary architecture. They weren’t trying to create some iconic landmark that screams “look at me” from across the valley. Instead, the bivouac takes its visual cues from classic alpine tents, those temporary shelters that early mountaineers relied on during their high-altitude adventures. The exterior is wrapped in a lightweight fabric skin made by Ferrino, a Turin-based company known for mountaineering equipment. This rippling, shimmering material gives the structure a sense of impermanence, almost like it’s acknowledging its own fragility against the backdrop of ancient mountains. The construction process was its own kind of adventure. Because the site sits at such a high altitude and is accessible only to experienced climbers, traditional building methods were out of the question. The solution? Prefabricate the entire thing in three parts, weighing about 2,000 kilograms total, and have a helicopter drop it into place during a brief weather window before snowstorms rolled in. It’s the kind...

https://slashdot.org/story/25/11/02/1945203/is-openai-becoming-too-big-to-fail https://slashdot.org/story/25/11/02/1945203/is-openai-becoming-too-big-to-fail

Executive Councilor Joe Kenny, State Senator Mark McConkie and representatives of the New Hampshire Municipal Association addressed the Brookfield Town Planning Board on Aug. 11, focusing on housing, accessory dwelling unit rules and recent state actions affecting development on Class 6 roads. The officials said housing remains the region’s top issue and urged local engagement as the Legislature and state agencies continue to change land-use rules. “It is the number 1 crisis for any employer that I speak to,” State Senator Mark McConkie said of housing, describing local efforts and statewide programs to spur development and noting the state had directed money to projects through an Invest in New Hampshire program. Why it matters: Brookfield is updating its master plan while the state has moved to expand by-right ADU authority and lawmakers have debated bills that change how and where towns may allow development. Planning boards and residents face questions about how to reconcile local master plans and voters’ preferences with state law and new statutory requirements. Most important facts - Executive Councilor Joe Kenny and State Senator Mark McConkie met with the Planning Board to hear local concerns and explain state activity on housing and related statutes. Kenny said he was “here tonight to listen to your concerns on housing and the like.” - The Planning Board and guests discussed the recently advanced ADU statute (referred to in the meeting as House Bill 577). NHMA staff explained the new law’s effect on municipal permitting: if a property meets state criteria, an ADU must be permitted by right and cannot be made subject to conditional-use permits or special-exception processes. - Municipal Association representative Bernie Deshais told the board that state changes have narrowed local discretion over development on Class 6 roads and other zoning matters. He described past practice in which municipalities considered Class 6 development on a case-by-case basis and...

ADU; - Neighbors oppose ADU at 75 Washington Street; applicant wi...
An application to construct a detached, 900-square-foot accessory dwelling unit (ADU) at 75 Washington Street was withdrawn after substantial neighborhood opposition and board questions about setbacks, parking and emergency access. Attorney John Kelty presented the application on behalf of the Jacoosh family, seeking side-yard variances for a 45-by-20-foot ADU in the rear yard that would require a 6-foot left side setback where 15 feet is normally required. Kelty said the lot is narrow (about 43.5 feet wide) and that the proposed location responds to an existing right-of-way that provides rear access. He said the ADU was intended for the family's daughter and described the primary house as an older structure that predates zoning. Kelty told the board he could move the building to the other side and re-advertise if necessary. Board members and several residents raised concerns. Board members asked about parking counts, emergency vehicle access and whether the main building is a two- or three-family. The applicant said the on-site plan showed eight spaces; the board noted ADU rules require one space and individual apartments generally require two. One board member said he would ask the fire department to review access before the next meeting. Several neighbors spoke in opposition, citing privacy, safety and overcrowding: Sharon Kelly of 1 Washington Place; Jake Mackey and Jennifer Mackey of 3 Washington Place; Nancy Davis of 79 Washington Street; and Elsa Vieira of 7 Washington Place. Comments included that the ADU would be “too close for comfort,” that the rear yard is already crowded with boats and sheds, and that adding the ADU could effectively convert the property to a higher-occupancy use. After hearing opposition and board questions, counsel asked to withdraw the application, and the board voted to allow the withdrawal. The attorney said he intends to redraw plans and may return; the board said the applicant will be notified if the matter is refiled.

- Lynnwood council weighs how many homes a ...
Lynnwood City Council on Monday considered two staff options for updating the city’s Unified Development Code that would implement new state housing laws and set how many dwelling units are allowed on single-family lots. The planning team told council members state legislation requires at least two units per lot in residential zones and allows four units within a quarter-mile of bus rapid transit or light rail; separate state language also requires allowance for two accessory dwelling units (ADUs) per lot and sets a new ADU size baseline at roughly 1,000 square feet. City planning staff said the code rewrite aims to consolidate existing development rules (LMC chapter 135 and titles 18, 19 and 20) into a clearer, shorter Unified Development Code and to codify objective design standards. Planning manager Karl (Karl, community planning manager) framed the choice Council must make as either: (1) limit lots by housing typology (a “1+2” approach that treats a primary house plus up to two ADUs differently from middle-housing forms), or (2) set a simple maximum number of units per lot (for example three) regardless of typology and allow four where state rules trigger that bonus for an affordable unit. Why it matters: the council heard that option 1 would meet state minimums but could constrain homeowners who want to retain an existing primary house while adding larger accessory units; option 2 would give more flexibility and make it easier to preserve existing structures but might reduce incentives to build the state-allowed fourth unit tied to affordability. Principal planner Rebecca Sammie told the council staff sees trade-offs in choice of typology-based limits versus a flat unit count. Plans and specifics: staff highlighted several implementation details that will affect feasibility for homeowners and developers. ADUs will be allowed at the new 1,000-square-foot baseline that the state set, though the city could set a larger limit; the RN (residential neighborhood) zone...

Boy Scouts has given me a new perspective through lessons that go far beyond badges and outings. I currently hold the Star rank in Boy Scout Troop 1747 in Valencia, Orange County. When I first joined Boy Scouts, I had no idea how much it would shape me. I thought it was just about camping, tying knots, and earning badges. Over the years, it became so much more. Scouting has taught me leadership, resilience, and the value of giving back. One experience that really stands out was leading the younger scouts in cooking and setting up tents when our patrol leader was absent. That moment made me realize how much I had grown and how Scouting was helping me become the best version of myself. Before Boy Scouts, I wasn‘t always the most confident person. I tended to hang back and just watch as patrol leaders and scouts helped each other and had fun together. However, when I got the chance to serve as an assistant patrol leader, everything changed. Suddenly, I was the one people looked to for guidance. I had to make decisions, solve problems, and keep things running smoothly. There were times I doubted myself, like when I was the only leader available to help new scouts. Through trial and error, I learned how to apply the leadership skills I had picked up from older scouts and use them to guide the younger ones. Now, I use those same leadership skills in my journalism class and at school-whether I’m working on a news story in a group or helping classmates finish their projects. Of course, my Scouting journey hasn‘t always been easy. There were moments I wanted to quit, especially when I thought about the long list of merit badges I needed for the next rank. At times, I felt discouraged and wondered if I had the drive to keep going. Instead of giving up, I pushed through. Looking back, I’m glad I did, because that experience taught me to persevere and not back down in tough situations. Now, whenever I face challenges in everyday life, I remind myself of ...

Real estate group purchases partial data center in Chandler
Real estate group purchases partial data center in Chandler Nov 2, 2025, 8:00 PM | Updated: Nov 3, 2025, 12:29 pm PHOENIX — Lincoln Property Company announced the purchase of a partially-occupied data center in Chandler on Friday. The Dallas-based company expects to built out the vacant space of the commercial real estate property and install a cooling system that they say could save millions of gallons of water monthly. “This facility will add critical turnkey capacity with immediately available utility power,” Lincoln Property Company National Data Center Group Leader Ryan Sullivan said in a release. “It’s a rare combination that we look forward to delivering as part of our ongoing value-add data center strategy.” Lincoln Property Company expects the property to be ready for lease in the first quarter of 2026. The property is located near the intersection of Loop 101 and Loop 202 off Frye Road and was previously owned by the Lincoln Property Company from 2018-2019. “We originally purchased and managed this facility to achieve its highest and best use,” Lincoln Property Company Senior Executive Vice President David Krumwiede said. CBRE were the sellers of the property. They note in the release that metro Phoenix ranks as the nation’s fourth largest data center market and vacancy rates for such buildings are under 2%. The facility on Frye Road is the newest addition to the Lincoln Property Company’s Phoenix portfolio, which is now measured at 23.2 million square feet of space in commercial real estate properties like Park303, Luke Field, Goodyear AirPark, Union and the Grand at Papago Park Center.

These Transparent Rolling Chairs Turn Your Living Room I...
Like De Stijl once deconstructed form and space into elemental purity, Color Roller reimagines that legacy through motion and transparency. Using the three primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, this experimental furniture collection plays with the relationship between geometry, light, and interaction. When made transparent, these primary hues transcend their boundaries, merging into endless new shades through layering and rotation. The result is not just furniture, but an evolving chromatic sculpture that invites users to participate in the reconstruction of their environment. At its core, Color Roller explores how color and form can coexist as active agents in spatial design. Each of the three components, a hexagonal chair, rectangular table, and triangular floor lamp, embodies a minimalist geometry while sharing a dynamic logic of rolling and transformation. Made entirely from transparent acrylic panels that intersect in pairs, these forms create a vivid and flexible composition of color. Depending on light direction and intensity, the furniture transforms, casting overlapping shadows and gradients that turn interiors into interactive canvases. Designer: Chuheng He The unique property of Color Roller lies in its capacity to change color combinations through rolling and rearrangement. By simply flipping or rotating the pieces, users can recompose the palette of their space. This transforms the act of furnishing into an act of play and authorship, where each arrangement reflects personal taste, emotion, and atmosphere. The design embraces De Stijl’s philosophy of modularity and freedom, yet it translates those ideas into a tactile, participatory experience. From a technical standpoint, Color Roller is realized through colored acrylic thermoforming and adhesive bonding. The production process required precise experimentation to ensure both structural integrity and optical clarity. The research began with 1:5 scale models exploring the overlapping behavior of panels ...

Landlords Are Using AI to Make Photos of Nasty Apar...
Landlords are using AI to populate rooms with nonexistent furniture, move walls around, dream up imaginary facades, rooflines, and landscaping, and brighten up rooms that are in reality devoid of sunlight. Case in point, a Zillow listing recently identified by children’s book illustrator DeAnn Wiley, recently interviewed by Slate, shows an AI-yassified facade of a rental property in Detroit, Michigan that’s smoothed over to a comical degree. It was an astonishing makeover: rooms didn’t show the grime the house had accumulated over the decades, thanks to an AI repainting the walls or refinishing floors. And as Wired reports, some AI companies are taking the trend even further. One firm called AutoReel, founded by a former Facebook product manager named Alok Gupta, turns static images of properties into short video clips, selling renters or buyers on a reality that arguably doesn’t exist. National Association of Realtors director of innovation strategy Dan Weisman told Wired that he observed a “huge uptick in people” using AI. “I’ve been at a few conferences over the past few weeks, and just anecdotally speaking, we’ll ask out of 100 people in the audience how many are using AI, and I’d say 80 to 90 percent of people raise their hand,” he said. “When we started this two years ago, we kind of got a no from customers,” Gupta added. “In 2024, they started saying ‘tell us more.’ And then this year, they’ve been asking, ‘How do I get started?'” Despite rising concerns among people looking for housing that they’re being sold on a fantasy, landlords and real estate professionals remain happy to cut costs with the help of AI. Gupta told Wired that people could save anywhere from “$500 to $1,000” by foregoing the need to hire a videographer. Others were even more blunt. “Why would I send my photos of an empty room to a virtual stager, have them spend four days and send it back to me at a charge of 500 bucks when I can just do it in ChatGPT for free in 45 seconds?” American Rea...
