The Lift House, a compact red cottage perched atop a mobile scissor lift, stands as both a functional prototype and a conceptual manifesto for living in an era when the ground beneath our feet can no longer be trusted. Currently on display at ArkDes – The Swedish Center for Architecture and Design in Stockholm as part of the “Beredd (Ready)” exhibition, the project emerged from urgent questions about emergency preparedness. “In an era of increasing downpours, record rainfall, and sudden weather shifts, the work explores what it means to live in a state of constant emergency,” explains Mejergren. “What do we choose to take with us? How do we live when the ground beneath us can no longer be trusted?” Designer: Ulf Mejergren Engineering Domesticity The architectural solution is deceptively simple yet technically sophisticated. A traditional Swedish cottage, complete with gabled roof and wooden panel cladding, sits mounted on an industrial scissor lift painted in classic Swedish red. The marriage of vernacular domesticity with industrial mechanics creates a striking dialogue between comfort and functionality, between permanence and mobility. Material efficiency drove every design decision. With the lift’s capacity limited to just 227 kilograms, each component required careful calculation to maintain structural balance and stability. The simplified chimney, fabricated from CNC-cut MDF, and the minimal interior furnishings all contribute to the project’s strategic lightness. From September 18 to 20, we all gathered at Baie de Beauport to celebrate the 9th edition of El Campo. Honestly? It was unforgettable. The sunshine, the smiles, the funkiest vans—you couldn’t have asked for more! A magical setting Choosing Baie de Beauport to host El Campo 2025 was a brilliant move! Between the river, the beach, and the wide open space, it truly felt like we had found our own little slice of paradise. And logistically, everything went smoothly: 500 vans parked without a hitch, everyone found their spot without stepping on each other’s toes. Bonus: not a single van got stuck when it was time to leave. Everyone rolled out with ease. Yes! For us, waking up to a river view, coffee in hand, while the kids zoomed off on the bike path happier than ever… we thought: “Ok, this is El Campo.” Perfect weather, glowing vibes The stars aligned: full sun all weekend long, warm days, and just the right evening chill for gathering around the campfires. Seriously, we couldn’t have asked for better. Awnings out, tables set up, neighbors dropping by to say hi, curious visitors touring vans, a round of spikeball, and even a spontaneous pétanque tournament… that’s exactly what the El Campo spirit is all about. Traveling through Newfoundland in a van means embarking on an adventure on an island that combines raw nature, genuine hospitality, and unexpected moments. A family road trip that definitely ranks among our all-time favorites. We began our road trip from Estrie, heading toward Nova Scotia. Everything started in North Sydney, where we boarded the ferry to Channel-Port aux Basques. We love ferries! A 6.5-hour journey awaited us. If your budget allows: book a cabin (especially if you have a child or are prone to seasickness). It also lets you take a shower before hitting the road again. That little comfort makes a big difference when starting the adventure to Newfoundland. First Wave at Cape Ray We had barely arrived and were already surrounded by breathtaking scenery. On one side, impressive mountains; on the other, the vast ocean! We quickly searched for a nearby beach. Off to Cape Ray—a wide, peaceful beach with just enough waves to bring out the boards. Zak runs everywhere, Julien plays in the water, and Karo slowly recovers from the ferry’s rocking. The sand, sea spray, and cries of seagulls—Newfoundland greets us with energy, and we’re so happy to finally be here. We spent the night at Grand Codroy RV Park, a simple and well-located campground near the ferry terminal. Coffee, Mountains, and Billions of Years The next day, we hit the road toward Corner Brook. A must-stop: Harbour Grounds, a cozy café serving the best lattes in town and mouthwatering pastries. They even have fun little games for Zak! Whether you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy your van over the winter or it’s been in storage, it’s always a good idea to do a spring clean and get your van in order for the upcoming peak season. Here are the steps to follow to clean and de-winterize your van. 1. Clean and inspect the exterior of your van It’s always a good idea to freshen up your van with a thorough exterior wash. If it was stored indoors for winter, a layer of dust may have accumulated everywhere. If it was stored outside, leaves may have gotten inside the hood. In any case, when it’s time to de-winterize your van, take the time to remove all the debris and then wash your van with good protective soap, from the roof to the wheels. Once this is complete, take a thorough walk around the van to inspect the exterior, windows, and seals. If you find any cracks, breaks, rust, or mildew, it’s time to plan for repairs. Afterward, inspect your exterior accessories such as your fan and awnings, making sure they are clean and still working properly. 2. Restart your electrical system For those of you who removed your battery while storing your van in the winter, now is the time to put it back in place!
